Character Reference Letters
As part of the portfolio requirements, students must obtain three reference letters from adults who can attest to their readiness for high school. These adults could include coaches, religious leaders, family friends, neighbors, music instructors, employers or any other adult who could write a letter verifying the student's readiness for high school.
Students should NOT ask teachers or parents. Teachers may get an overload of student requests, and in order to equally distribute the work required for each letter, teachers may not have time to complete all of these requests. Due to nepotism, parents (or others who may fulfill a parent role like step-parents or parent's significant others) should not write reference letters for their student unless they double as a coach, for example, and can write about their child as a player on the team. Other extended family members may be asked for references but only as a last resort. This assignment should be practice for the types of letters that students will asking for as they apply for college or get a job.
Students should arrive to school with three business sized envelopes on Wednesday, December 18th, 2013. If you are not able to afford envelopes, please let me know ASAP. Students should also arrive to schools with the names and addresses of three adults who they could ask for reference letters. We will work in class to compose these letters, but students are ultimately responsible for mailing these letters on their own. In the letter request, students will include information of their homeroom teacher so that the reference letter writers will know where to send the reference letters. Both copies of the letter requests and the actual letters will go into the portfolio and checked off. Failure to complete this portfolio assignment will result in summer school until it is completed.
