Madame Schacter, a woman with a 10 year-old son, lost her mind and began screaming about a fire that only she could see. The train reached Birkenau, and there were flames smoking from tall chimneys and the stench of burning flesh. A SS officer started divided men and women. Elie would never again see his sister or mother. Elie started to rebel again God and contemplated suicide.

Elie was beaten unconscious, and then he was discovered by a young Polish girl. A man was shot for stealing food during an air raid, and another one was hung for the same reason. Other prisoners are hung as well while their peers had to watch.

Elie realized his son had deliberately left him and that he would never do the same to his father. At Gleiwitz, prisoners were crowded into barracks and many were smothered--including Juliek. Elie created a diversion to save his father once again. Finally, prisoners were put into a cattle car once again.
Summary for pages 93-109: The starving prisoners fought to death for the crust of bread. Meir Katz, who saved Elie earlier, was someone who died before the ride was over. Elie's father, who moaned for water, was struck in the head and died, taken to the crematory while Elie slept. A few months later, Buchenwald was liberated.
